Wellington & Other Boots

Wellingtons

Wellingtons are those rubber boots with which you can step in every puddle and never get wet. They are called Wellingtons after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, who made them fashionable in his circles about 200 years ago, when rich people started to practise hunting as a sport and not as a neccessity in order to get food.

Wellingtons are made from rubber and do not let any water go through, neither from the outside to the inside of the boot nor from the inside to the outside of the boot. This also means that if you tend to have sweaty feet, your feet will be very wet and smelly after some time of wearing wellingtons! But then there are always socks and shoe inserts that can take up some of that sweat so that it doesn't get uncomfortable.

Other boots

There are also special winter and snow boots that are not as high as wellingtons but have a very thick and coarse sole so that the cold from the ground doesn't go through and that you don't slip on ice and snow.
And there are even special snow shoes that look like you have a tennis racket attached to the bottom of your shoe! They help you not to sink in in deep snow.
