People across the country made the most of the hottest temperatures of the year last weekend as experts gave warning that another bout of dreary weather was imminent.

Parks and beer gardens across the country were packed with people enjoying a welcome reprieve from the recent inclement conditions. London was the hottest spot, hitting 30.3C in the afternoon, while much of England and Wales enjoyed temperatures in the high 20s. Nigel Bolton, a Met Office forecaster, said that temperatures in London were between 6C to 7C above average. “Bearing in mind we have been used to temperatures a lot cooler, it probably feels quite stifling,” he said.

Hopes of a prolonged period of sunshine are likely to be dashed, with rain expected to set in again over the next few weeks. The Met Office has forecast unsettled weather over the next fortnight, with showers merging into longer spells of rain.
