2nd February 2009: Snow chaos in London and all England

What a surprise to look out of the window this morning and see streets, cars and my garden covered in snow. At least 10 cm of snow came down over night and more snow expected throughout the day and in the next days to come.

Neighbours are building snowmen and a lot of schools (50 schools I heard) were closed today due to the severe snowfall.
Public transport was hit by the heavy snow. In fact there were no busses this morning and a lot of tube lines were partly suspended or not running at all which made it nearly impossible to get into work this morning. The congestion charge was suspended in the captital today as London was faced with "some of the most challenging weather conditions" seen in the city for two decades, the mayor, Boris Johnson, said. He had instructed Transport for London to suspend the £8 charge "as a gesture of my appreciation for those who have travelled to work this morning".

The weather hit also travellers. While it seemed in the early hours that planes would depart with delays, Heathrow got closed later on as well. It is reported that flights will go out again in the late afternoon.

Here a few winter impressions from home and the back garden:

As it might be difficult leaving the house for shopping, why not shop online and get prepared for the winter wonderland :-)

Here a list of a few must haves for the cold and snowy days

Fun to play outside in the snow. Especially kids will love a sledge. Even with little hills a sledge is always great fun.
Keep your hands warm with winter gloves, that you where when skiing. They may not be the most fashionable but they definitely keep your fingers warm and try. Especially they are from great use for a snow ball fight!
A nice hat not only keeps you warm but also protects you against the falling snow. Alternative would be an umbrella. My personal preference however would be a fluffy trendy hat
