No snow after all - but sunniest winter on record! This morning I did not cycle and consequently I read the Metro newspaper. Britain has had more than 196 hours of sunshine in the winter months of December, January and February. That is 37% more than average and more than any other winter since records began in 1929. England was even sunnier, with a record 227 hours of sunshine, 40% more than usual. Not surprisingly, cloudy Scotland had only 149 hours of sun. The Met Office also published that the winter was provisionally the 10th warmest since 1914. 4 other winters since 1990 have made it into the top 10. In contrast to these news, last winter was the mildest winter ever to be recorded in southern England. But the Met Office also warned that long-range forecasts are predicitng a far cooler spring than we had in 2007 - where spring seemed to replace summer, with below average temperatures. Does that mean we can hope for a proper summer? |
